Game Design Article - Astrobirdz Card Game

Astrobirdz™ Card Game

By

James M. Ward

We game designers are a strange lot. As we design and play our games we think we are making everything very clear in our rules and card text. Imagine our surprise (game after game) as people ask questions about our games that we never imagined anyone would ask.

I wanted to make the card rules text as clear as possible when I wrote out those cards. On the slim chance that I didn’t make myself clear, I’ve made this article to straighten things out a bit more.

#9 Red Card

9s are not beaten by lower Trump color cards played.

Let’s say a black four was played in a round where red is trump. The next player plays a seven red and trumps the round. The next player plays a black nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the black nine takes the hand.

#8 Red Card

Double all points scored.

There is no one in the universe who can’t understand this card, but let me say that at the end of the round when all points are totaled, double that total under this rule. Yes, this includes the board bonus and all the foil card bonus’.

#7 Red Card

All ‘1’ cards count as ‘10’ cards.

Normally, nine is the highest number, under this rule the #1 cards count as #10 cards and beat all other cards that are not trump cards.

#6 Red Card

Everyone draws another card.

In the rare case that there are too many players, those who don’t get a card are just out of luck that round of cards. Or maybe not as they can have an easier chance of figuring out how many tricks they are taking.

#5 Red Card

Any 2 or 3 played during a trick this round score 2 points each.

These numbers are scored at a bonus for the people taking those 2s and 3s. Don’t think the people who played those 2s and 3s get the points.

#4 Red Card

All red cards taken in tricks this round score 2 points each.

These red cards score the extra points only for those people who take the tricks and not the people who played the cards.

#3 Red Card

No special power. Play all tricks normally.

There is no extra rule used in this round of cards.

#2 Red Card

Any 2 played during a trick changes the Trump color to Orange for that trick.

Under this card, the trump color would be red. When a person plays any 2, the trump changes to orange.

#1 Red Card

All red cards taken in tricks this round score 1 point each.

These red cards score the extra points only for those people who take the tricks and not the people who played the cards.

#9 Black Card

9s are not beaten by lower Trump Color cards played.

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where black is trump. The next player plays a seven black and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand.

#8 Black Card

8s are not beaten by lower Trump Color cards or by 9s played.

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where black is trump. The next player plays a seven black and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand. When a player in the same round plays a red 8 the trump cards are ignored and the red 9 is ignored.

Note: If a yellow 8 was played in this round where red was led, it doesn’t take the hand or beat the red 9 previously played.

#7 Black Card

Double all points scored.

There is no one in the universe who can’t understand this card, but let me say that at the end of the round when all points are totaled, double that total under this rule. Yes, this includes the board bonus and all the foil card bonus’.

#6 Black Card

Everyone draws 2 more cards.

In the rare case that there are too many players, those who don’t get a card are just out of luck that round of cards. But, make sure everyone gets at least one card, if possible. Then deal out the rest of the cards even if everyone doesn’t get a second.

#5 Black Card

Any ‘2’ or ‘5’ played during a trick changes the Trump color to Pink for that trick.

Under this card, the trump color would be black. When a person plays any 2 or 5, the trump changes to pink, just for that round of cards.

#4 Black Card

All black cards taken in tricks this round score 3 points each.

These black cards score the extra points only for those people who take the tricks and not the people who played the cards.

#9 Yellow Card

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where yellow is trump. The next player plays a seven yellow and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand.

#8 Yellow Card

The oldest player picks Trump Color for this turn.

It might seem a little unfair, but some would say, “That’s the game!” The oldest player looks at his card (s) and decides what trump he would like.

#7 Yellow Card

The youngest player picks Trump Color for this turn.

The youngest player gets too look at his card (s) and decides what trump he would like.

#6 Yellow Card

The dealer picks Trump Color for this turn.

The rules specify who deals and how the deal is past.

#5 Yellow Card

All ‘5’ cards taken in tricks this round score 3 points each.

The ‘5s’ score at the end, only for those who have taken them in their tricks.

#4 Yellow Card

Give your highest numbered card to the person on your right.

If you have two 9s as your highest numbered cards, you pick one and hand it over.

#3 Yellow Card

Give your lowest numbered card to the person on your right.

If you have two 1s as your lowest numbered cards, you pick one and hand it over.

#2 Yellow Card

Any 2 played during the trick changes the Trump Color to Green for that trick.

Under this card, the trump color would be yellow. When a person plays any 2, the trump changes to green, just for that round of cards.

#1 Yellow Card

All yellow cards taken in tricks this round score 2 points each.

The yellow cards score at the end, only for those who have taken them in their tricks.

#9 Orange Card

9s are not beaten by lower Trump Color cards played.

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where orange is trump. The next player plays a seven orange and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand.

#8 Orange Card

Double all points scored.

There is no one in the universe who can’t understand this card, but let me say that at the end of the round when all points are totaled, double that total under this rule. Yes, this includes the board bonus and all the foil card bonus’.

#7 Orange Card

Everyone discards one card.

If this card rule comes up when everyone only has one card, the rule is a problem. Instead of starting the round over, just ignore this rule when there is only one card in hand.

#6 Orange Card

Everyone draws 2 more cards.

In the rare case that there are too many players, those who don’t get a card are just out of luck that round of cards. But, make sure everyone gets at least one card, if possible. Then deal out the rest of the cards even if everyone doesn’t get a second.

#5 Orange Card

Give Berzerkerbirdz cards to the player on your left.

You are just exchanging your foil card for this round only. This happens before any of the foil cards powers kick in.

These orange cards score the extra points only for those people who take the tricks and not the people who played the cards.

In the rare case where there isn’t enough cards for all the players, make sure each player gets one card in order and then give a second card to those with more cards needed.

#2 Orange Card

Any 2 played during a trick changes the Trump Color to Yellow for that trick.

Under this card, the trump color would be orange. When a person plays any 2, the trump changes to yellow.

#1 Orange Card

All orange cards taken in tricks this round score 2 points each.

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where pink is trump. The next player plays a seven pink and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand.

#8 Pink Card

The Player with the lowest Berzerkerbirdz card picks Trump Color for this turn.

People please, that is a straight forward as it gets.

#7 Pink Card

The player taking the first trick gains 5 points.

I’m thinking that one is pretty clear as well.

#6 Pink Card

The player taking the last trick gains 5 points.

I hope that one is simple enough to understand.

#5 Pink Card

Odd scores gain an extra 5 points.

When each player is all done scoring for the round, those with an odd number in that round’s total gains an extra five points.

#4 Pink Card

All ‘4’ cards count as ‘10’ cards.

Even if you don’t want your 4 card to be higher, it must be for this round and a four would beat the 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s in the same suit.

#3 Pink Card

Everyone draws 3 more cards.

In the rare case that there are too many players, those who don’t get a card are just out of luck that round of cards. But, make sure everyone gets at least one card, if possible. Then deal out the rest of the cards even if everyone doesn’t get a second or a third.

#9 Green Card

9s are not beaten by lower Trump Color cards played.

Let’s say a red four was played in a round where green is trump. The next player plays a seven green and trumps the round. The next player plays a red nine. Because of the rule, in effect, the trump card is ignored and the red nine takes the hand.

#8 Green Card

All ‘8’ cards taken in tricks this round score 5 points each.

These green cards score the extra points only for those people who take the tricks and not the people who played the cards.

All ‘9’ cards count as ‘0’ cards.

9s are beat by every other card under this rule. A 0 green trump card still beats a 1-9 card that isn’t trump.
